With the combination of my Internship and my classes, I'm not finding much free time these days.  So I probably won't be getting on here very often for a while.  I'll still check in on messages and journals when I can, but it will likely be sporadic.

The big 30.

1 min read
Well, my 30th birthday has finally arrived.  It weirded me out a bit yesterday, but I'm cool with it now.  I don't really have any plans for it though, just going to sit home and enjoy a nice day off.  And then tomorrow I'll go pick out a nice set of dentures and a good sturdy walker :P

But in a mostly good way ^_^
In the last two days I went from being a happily unemployed student to being a quite unexpectedly employed student.  As I have mentioned in a recent  journal, I didn't expect to start an internship until the coming fall semester, but I've recently had a very good opportunity plop down into my lap which was just too good to pass up.  One of my favorite teacher's friend, was looking for a student for an internship position, so she suggested me.  Long story short, I went in yesterday, expecting to just find out more about what the position was and wound up being interviewed by the above mentioned friend and the head of the department.  They said they would let me know by the end of next week what they had decided, but I got an e-mail from them today saying that they both agreed I was perfect for the job and that they were going to quit interviewing people and offer it to me.  I was very impressed with the work environment, as it is a very positive and upbeat department, and I couldn't ask for more in an internship, so I took the job.

The first bit of good news is that the internship is on campus, so I don't have any additional commute time added to my day, which is a big deal for me, as it gives me more time for other stuff and I despise driving (unless I'm all alone in the country, then it's wonderful.)  Also, I might be able to get it to count for 3 hours of credit, while still getting paid for it, which I wasn't expecting at all.  Though I do have to go talk to my department advisory to see if that is going to be able to happen for sure.  But even if not, it is a paid internship, so that is really good.  Also, being that my employer is on staff with the college, I will never have to worry about getting time off to study when I need to.  But the best part is that I pretty much get to decide what I want to do with the internship.  The job is with our placement testing center, that administers entry tests to applicants that don't have the required ACT scores, or whatever the case may be, and helps people that don't pass the test the first time around get what they need to study up and prepare to take it again.  So basically, I will go in and help out with such activities and get to know the system they work with.  Then, once I know the system, I can pick any project on it that I want, so long as it improves the system in some way.  The two things we've talked about already, that I'm very much interested in are building a database for the system to keep track of potential student information and scores, as the current database doesn't really do what they need it to do, or continuing work on their tutoring software that is currently in development.  But if I come up with something better, then I can do that instead.  Basically, it's a brilliant learning opportunity, that will count as work experience, maybe count for 3 credit hours, and I'll get paid for it!  So I'm really excited.

The only drawback really is that I start in three weeks, but I don't mind that much, considering the opportunity.  Really, the only thing I'll be losing is the additional time I was going to have to continue my drawing studies this summer, but that was going to end after the summer anyway, so it's not that big of a change.  Plus I will hopefully still get some time to draw during summer classes, as I will only be taking one class.

But anyway, I'm pretty excited about all this, so I could ramble on here for hours, but this has already become quite the block of text so I will go ahead and stop now :P

BTW, if you actually read all of that, then you deserve a very heart felt appreciation cookie :cookie:

First off, I must say that I love DA's April Fools joke.  I've particularly enjoyed the new signatures.  It seems like they really put some time into this gag.

Well, on to personal news.  I've started the process of looking for a programming internship, which is sort of a mixed bag for me.  On the one hand, I've sorta missed not having a job for the last three years, and having a little money again will be really nice.  But on the other hand, it will mean that I will basically have next to no free time, if I have any at all, until I graduate in December 2011.  So when I do get an internship, my time on here will go back down, and I probably won't have any time at all for drawing, which really sucks.  But I should be able to at least log on a little bit, just to keep in touch with people.

As for when I'm starting, I don't really know yet.  It's basically any time between now and the beginning next Fall's semester.  I'm hoping for the beginning of next fall, but there is an internship at the school that one of my professors told me about yesterday and is recommending me for.  So if that turns out to be an internship I'm interested in, and I get the position, then I imagine that I will be starting much sooner then next Fall.  Or if some other good opportunity comes up between now and then, I'll probably take it.

So, long story short, I may go back to not being very active on here again soon :(  But I may still have a while yet.  We'll see I guess.
